Consider Thus
It appears I've lost some "friends" on LJ. I suspect it's because my first reaction to the politicizing of a natural disaster wasn't a full-throttled embrace of it, instead choosing to reflect on the fragility of life, nature, dignity, etc. Which is fine.

Totally fine.

I will approach this tragedy my way. You process it yours. And no harm done. I just hope that we can all--myself WAY included--can acknowledge that our political opinions, our beliefs about how the world works, do not define us. They are not us. They are just streams we step into, then out of again.

I'm trying to open myself to new ways of thinking. More precisely, I'm trying NOT to adhere myself to a system of thought that denies the possibility that other truths may "work" better for me. Thus, I have changed my mind, in part, about the current administration's role in the atrophied relief efforts. It is obvious, thanks to some of you guys, that short-sightedness was at issue here. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

But right now, placing blame--as the eloquent and fiercely intelligent [info]doctortina recently posted--doesn't seem like the best use of our efforts. Donate money if you wish, donate clothes too, and medicine, make a phone call, house a family. Or, just sit down in a quiet room and consider.

Considering is doing me wonders these days.

A guy on my friend's list, [info]bobbola, made a good post about the hurricane and the administration. Check it out, if you'd like.

I've tried to do what I can. My boyfriend and I both have donated money and clothes through our jobs.

We do what we can.

And god knows I have some clothes that would look better on these folks than on my fat cheesburger American ass.

I grew up in Biloxi, Mississippi, and now I live in Colorado. My relatives are homeless now. My friends are homeless now. The family home my great great grandfather built himself is gone. I'm lucky, because at least they are still alive.

It would be all too easy to point a finger of blame at George, who I don't like, but I know better. Of course he's responsible for the screwed up things that he's done, but I personally feel that instantaneous politicizing is short-sighted.

I think it's pretty obvious that nothing good will come from this administration. I didn't need Katrina to tell me that. I'll just jot this down on my list. I think too many people are seeing this as the straw that broke the camel's back. I think this camel moved to Canada on November 2nd.

The thing is, people are going to need blood transfusions and housing. George will get his later.

I think the federal government's response to Katrina will be crucial in shaping the next few years the American political landscape. If Bush doesn't handle this almost perfectly, the backlash amidst his "southern base" could be significant. I'm not rooting for that, however, because it would mean victims would be further victimized, but if anything good comes out of this disaster, it might be that: a cross-country awakening to the true callousness of this administration.

I think it's a little too late for an awakening. Do you think something like that would sway their decisions in the next election?

I think you are entitled to feel and speak how you wish. There's no reason to de-friend. That's ridiculous. I have no interest in sharing my life and interests with people only if they think and speak the way I do.

I don't need that kind of orthodoxy from my friends...and I count you among my good, dear friends.

And I, you. My sincerest apologies for not making to Crawford, by the way. My head was pounding and my stomach was angry. (I've read all the news reports, btw.)

Yeah, orthodoxy is a good way of putting it. I certainly don't hold it against anyone who wishes to defriend me, but it does give me some insight into their views about what constitutes loyalty and what doesn't. Or hell, maybe it gives me no insight at all.

All I know is: You're still on the list. Thanks.

I de-friended you, but it had nothing to do with your political views. It was just because you're an asshole.

I believe that I have to put my car in the shop (the window won't roll up) so if I do, I might not have a way to get there. If I don't put it in the shop today, or if I get it back in time then, yeah.

Oh, I saw it. But you are far too adorable to get mad at. Especially since I have other things to be really upset about. Like, ya know, my shaky Dallas Cowboys or the cancellation of Scrubs.

Tsk! Lack of smoking in bars has made you utterly smarmy!!

I will have you know that I have quite sworn off men. Sworn off, I tell you!

At least ones in real life. Now, no giving the adorable girl grief, or I shall litter your journal with 'I heart Andy'-s and vows of unrequited journal love.
