Katrina
I haven't written about it, because what can I write that doesn't instantly become cliched?

Only this thought keeps returning: My hope is that, out of all of this badness, Americans finally get an up-close-and-personal sense of what it's kinda like to live in about 90% of the rest of this planet. Myself included.

Also: I hope we don't start politicizing this too quickly, if ever. It's irrelevant and explotive to do so.

This happened with 9/11 too. People were writing poems and wondering if they had the right.

But you know what? As poets, it's our job and responsibility to catalogue major events.

The real question you should ask: "Am I actually adding anything meaningful?"

Plus, I would argue one can not live in the "polis" and not be political.
The only way to avoid politics (or interactions with others in the polis) would be to become a hermit.
Me, I see everything as political. Maybe that means I'm one of those who politicize everything (like the oil reserves being opened). But I still love you Andy Buck. Even if I don't agree with ya.

Hey, I'm just some random dude from NOLA. We've been thinking about how we're supposed to "remember Katrina" a year later, and I got curious what other people were talking about while I was stuck here. It was old news on the internet by the time I got back to civilization.

We're all trying to forget the thing, really. It sucked, and if you are here now you can't escape the reminders. We used to joke about it being a third world country, and that's become so much more true.

Which brings me to your quote, which didn't exactly become a prophecy. A lot of people have had the experience. Some came for a vacation, some came to volunteer, and a few even moved down here.

But most people still have no idea.

A lot of them don't wanna know. The people who said we were being punished for our transgressions, Fox News watchers, retards on the internet, people with short attention spans, seem to love to abuse the place. Fuck 'em. More crawfish for me.

Oh, and we actually called ourselves refugees, my people did anyway. That's exactly what we were. Except we didn't have to walk.

Anyway. Have a nice life!
